Top areas to visit in Lisbon

Lisbon is home to relaxed towns and lively districts. Whether you wish to enjoy a lovely stroll in the evenings or a refreshing drink at a nearby restaurant, Lisbon has many areas which are worth exploring. If you’re not completely sure on what the top areas are then these are definitely worth a visit:

  • Bairro Alto - If you're looking for nightlife and evening entertainment, the Bairro Alto district of Lisbon is a good choice. During the day Bairro Alto can be quite quiet and is suitable for a quick stroll through to other parts of Lisbon, but from midnight onwards the area gets very busy with tourists enjoying the warm air and cold Sagres.
  • Alfama - If you prefer something more traditional, this is the place for you. Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon and its narrow streets meander up the slope between the Tejo river and the Sao Jorge Castle. One of the only districts of Lisbon to survive the infamous 1755 Lisbon earthquake, the Alfama district remains the historic heart of Lisbon. Best to visit soon-ish before the area is swallowed up by the tourism that slowly envelops the rest of the city.
  • Baixa - The most central neighbourhood in Lisbon, Baixa was totally redesigned after the fateful Lisbon earthquake in the 18th century. There are dozens and dozens of shops and restaurants that filter outwards from the main street, the Avenida de Liberdade. Considered one of the most beautiful parts of Lisbon, this large avenue is lined with sophisticated 19th-century architecture. Other popular parts where you might look for a hotel in Baixa include Restauradores Square, Rossio Square and Praca do Comercio. Just outside the Baixa district lies Chiado, where you can find more restaurants and shopping.
