If you want to find out why there’s so much fuss being made about Zante (also known as Zakynthos) then the Two Brothers Studios are a good-value way to start your exploration. Kalamaki is a quiet resort – and a world-famous turtle beach – but livelier towns are just around the corner, and the whole island is easy to explore from this location very close to the airport.
Two Brothers Studios is a small, low-rise self-catering complex of 60 apartments built around a courtyard pool with shades, sun beds, gardens and a pool-side snack and drinks bar.
The apartments are simple and functional, with a traditional Greek feel to their décor and simple wooden furniture. All have private balconies, en-suite bathrooms, Wi-Fi access, TV, and air-conditioning. A small kitchen includes a couple of electric hobs, a coffee maker and toaster, but if you don’t want to start every day in the kitchen, there’s a breakfast buffet available to guests too.
Around the complex, you can chalk up your cue for a game of pool or two, and barbecuing is encouraged on facilities provided in the gardens. Twenty first-century travellers will be delighted to hear they can log in to free Wi-Fi at Two Brothers Studios.
You won’t have far to go to find more to see and do. The famous beach is just 800m away, and the resort centre just 100m. Kalamaki is pretty low-key. Nightlife is on the quiet end of the spectrum, and there’s still a traditional Greek feel to much of the village. The beach is in the National Marine Park that protects the visiting loggerhead turtles.
Neighbouring Laganas shares the beach, but has a much younger, livelier feel to it. The water sports that are curtailed for ecological reasons around Kalamaki are available in full force at Vassilikos. Zante Town, the island’s capital, has a pretty waterfront, and some stylish bars and shopping streets.
For young families in particular, it’s hard to find a more attractive Greek island location than Kalamaki. The Two Brothers Studios – available now with Loveholidays – are brilliant way to enjoy your Mediterranean sun this year.
