There are other delightful beaches nearby to explore, as well as the lively resort of Grand Baie, which is just up the coast and offers a wealth of shopping and nightlife. You could also visit the island capital of Port Louis, home to some stunning colonial architecture and a fabulous market, take a tour of Maison Eureka, one of the island’s best preserved plantation houses, or enjoy a day out in the luxuriant surroundings of the botanical gardens in Pamplemousses. And if you want to escape the crowds, there’s nowhere better than the breathtaking hills and forests of the Black River Gorges National Park.
It is hard to imagine a beach more perfect than Trou aux Biches. Set in a sheltered bay, and blessed with fine white sand and crystal clear azure waters, it is impossibly picturesque. You’ll find a host of amenities, whether you want to relax in luxury at one of the private beach clubs, or find a secluded spot for yourself. The snorkelling is excellent, thanks to a coral reef set just 250 metres from shore, and there are diving schools, which offer courses, equipment rental and excursions to the best dive sites. Just north of Trou aux Biches is Mont Choisy, which has one of the longest beaches on Mauritius, and another picture-postcard-perfect stretch of dazzling white sand.
