As well as peering into volcanic craters, why not climb inside a lava tube?! Cueva del Viento was formed by lava from Pico del Viejo and is over 18 kilometres long!
“Swimming with turtles” on your bucket list? Tiny El Puertito near Playa de las Americas is the home of a colony of sea turtles. Spot them from the shoreline or glide alongside them underwater.

Beaches in Tenerife

Over 400 kilometres of gorgeous beaches are at your disposal in Tenerife. Some are man-made from Saharan sand, but that shouldn’t put beach lovers off.

Playa de las Americas has to be the most famous beach in Tenerife! The golden stretch sits right in front of the resort, meaning there’s plenty of amenities, from water sports to buzzing beach clubs with live music.
Los Cristianos beach is just around the corner from Playa de las Americas. Its tranquil waters will definitely tempt you in for a swim! There’s also various beach huts selling snacks and drinks.
Los Gigantes is a classic example of a Canarian black sand beach. The protected bay offers up amazing sunbathing conditions, plus it’s backed by scenic 800-metre-high cliffs.
Playa Jardin in Puerto de la Cruz is one beach you’d never have guessed is man-made! Sandwiched between Punta Brava and San Felipe Castle, it was designed by famous artist Cesar Manrique and features palm trees and amazing cacti.
If you want to try windsurfing, the breezy conditions at Playa La Tejita are perfect. It’s the largest natural beach in Tenerife and you’ll find it on the island’s east coast.

Quiet beaches in Tenerife

Going off the tourist trail and far away from the crowds couldn’t be easier thanks to Tenerife’s many secluded beaches.

Small and brilliant for turtle spotting, Playa El Puertito is a must-see. Set within a sleepy fishing village in south Tenerife, it’s usually very quiet outside the busy summer season.
Playa Diego Hernandez is a wonderful place to relax away from the crowds. Hidden around the corner from Costa Adeje, the stretch of soft sand is so secluded that it even disappears at high tide!
For unrivalled views of Los Gigantes’ cliffs, Punta de Teno is well-worth visiting. The headland is a protected nature reserve and features several tiny coves brilliant for snorkelling when the sea is calm.
Playa del Bollullo is one of the worst kept secrets on Tenerife! Only reachable by foot from La Orotava, it’s a beautifully rugged black sand beach surrounded by banana plantations.
Playa de Benijo is a photographer’s dream thanks to its unspoilt shoreline and unique flora. It’s situated in south Tenerife within the beautiful Anaga Rural Park.

Pick up fresh local produce at Mercado Nuestra Señora de Africa. The largest food market in Tenerife’s capital, it hosts over 300 stalls selling raw ingredients and ready-to-eat delicacies.

Traditional dishes to try in Tenerife

Give your taste buds a treat by getting to grips with the local cuisine. Moreish mains and decadent dessert all on the menu on Tenerife last minute holidays.

Gofio is one of the oldest foods in the Canary Islands and was a major source of sustenance for the first settlers. It’s essentially a flour made from toasted grains that’s used in myriad sweet and savoury dishes.
You’ll find no shortage of mouth-watering seafood at Tenerife’s restaurants. For something particularly unique to the Canary Islands, order atún en adobo - fresh tuna marinated in herbs and gently fried.
Conejo al salmorejo (stewed rabbit) is one of Tenerife’s most popular traditional dishes. Rich and hearty, the rabbit is slow-cooked in a sauce infused with paprika, garlic, pepper and rosemary.
Canarian banana omelette is one of the best ways to sample Tenerife’s locally-grown bananas. It’s made up of finely sliced, unripe bananas, fresh eggs and a handful of raisins.
Dessert by far your favourite course? Sample some Principe Alberto. Similar to a tiramisu, this Canarian pudding consists of layers of cream, chocolate mousse, nuts and crushed biscuits.

The Lago Martiánez swimming complex in Puerto de la Cruz is a great spot for first time swimmers. Little ones can splash around in the kids’ pools, while teens can snooze on the sunbathing terrace.
If the family fancies a day out of the sunshine, head to Tenerife’s Museum of Science and the Cosmos. Located in La Laguna, it’s teeming with fascinating interactive exhibits and experiments.

Watching the sunset from Pico Viejo has to be one of the most romantic things to do in Tenerife! It’s the island’s second tallest mountain and easily conquered by foot. Begin at La Rambleta and make your way past calderas to the viewpoint at the volcano’s crater.
Wine tasting at 17th century La Casa de los Balcones is a lovely Tenerife date idea. The atmospheric mansion is filled with heirlooms from centuries gone by. The star attraction is its courtyard that’s overlooked by several intricately carved balconies.
If you’re not watching the sun go down from a volcano, see it slide below the horizon along the San Telmo Promenade in Puerto de la Cruz. The picturesque promenade is lined with colonial buildings housing casual cafes and romantic restaurants.
Longer couples’ Tenerife breaks call for a day trip to La Gomera. Located less than an hour away by ferry from Los Cristianos, the second smallest Canary Island is relatively untouched. It’s home to laid back villages, deserted beaches and virgin forests.
Love enjoying quality time wandering hand-in-hand around olde worlde towns? 16th century La Orotava won’t disappoint. Its picture-perfect cobbled streets are lined with colourful mansions, plus it’s set in a valley famous for growing bananas, grapes and chestnuts.
