Situated on the iconic Black Sea Coast, the cosmopolitan city of Varna is the ideal compromise of traditional charm and modern culture. A port city, naval base and seaside resort, this Bulgarian gem offers up everything from the finest museums to long stretches of sandy beach – ideal for lounging on. Stroll through its busy streets, taking in landmarks such as Varna Cathedral and the Festival and Congress Centre or explore the impressive Roman ruins, monuments left over from Varna’s bygone days. Whether you want to learn more about Varna’s rich maritime past, laze by the sea or experience Bulgaria’s thriving nightlife scene, there are plenty of things to see and do on your holidays in Varna.
The Sea Capital
With its vast area, there are a number of places to stay on your Varna holidays – from 5-star luxury hotels to 3-star lodgings and everything in between. Just North of Varna, you’ll find a strip of sand playing host to a number of beach resorts – from Golden Sands to Sunny Day. Whether you’re looking for relaxing beachside accommodation or simply somewhere to land yourself after a hard night’s partying, there are some great places to stay near the city’s coast. Situate yourself near to Primorski Park for the perfect combination of sandy shores and lush greenery. Meanwhile, history buffs should head for the city centre where you’ll find a great selection of museums – from Varna’s very own History Museum to the Archaeological Museum – boasting a myriad of Roman artefacts.
Hot Bulgarian Summers
Bulgaria boasts many days of sunshine during the long summer months – ensuring holidays in Varna from April to September are adequately sun-drenched. Besides the glorious weather, however, there are some great sights to see and new adventures to be had. As a prominent cultural city, it is no surprise that Varna is the setting of a Summer International Festival. Held between May and October, events include opera, ballet and jazz music. Summer is certainly the season when it comes to cultural events here – with an open-air theatre and open-air operas both taking place in the centre of the city. If you’d rather skip the opera and head straight to the bars, there are some great haunts to discover. Try Makalali for its laid-back atmosphere and buzzing DJ sets, complete with vibrant palm trees and rustic interior. Meanwhile, retro music fans should pay a visit to Copacabana for 80’s classics paired brilliantly with hot summer nights. Of course, Varna holidays are not complete without sampling some of the finest Bulgarian food available. Head to Mr Baba for locally produced seafood by the port, from sea bass to bluefish. For those with a sweet tooth, the local Mekitsa is a must-try. A sweet Bulgarian doughnut, the mixture is fried with sugar, jam or honey and makes a highly indulgent breakfast treat.
