Introducing holidays to Spartia
Looking for a relaxing Greek holiday? Dreaming of peace and quiet? The quiet village of Spartia, on the beautiful island of Kefalonia, could be your ideal destination. Facing south and protected from the winds, this sleepy village haven is located a few kilometres from the airport on the southeast coast of Kefalonia. Feel yourself transported back in time to traditional Greece, with pretty streets to stroll through, small shops and tavernas and a scenic village square where you can unwind beneath the bell tower and watch the world go by. The pace of life here is deliciously slow, giving you a chance to really relax away from the pressures of everyday modern life. The village is set back from the coast and enjoys a fantastic hillside location with stunning views out to sea but also has some lovely beaches that can be reached within 10 minutes drive.
Life’s a beach
Head down the hill to Spartia’s unspoilt sandy beach, located to one side of a small jetty and harbour, for fabulous views of the sea and yachts sailing past. The beach is sheltered by towering cliffs and the waters are beautifully clear. The stretch of coast is home to busier spots that are popular with families and quieter coves where you can sunbathe and swim in peace. The sea is warm and calm, perfect for children and less confident swimmers. Bring a snorkel and enjoy the fantastic sights beneath the sea. You’ll find a couple of small beachfront bars and tavernas where you can grab a cold beer and some food but the beauty of this beach is its natural feel. You won’t find sun loungers, umbrellas and banana boats but you will find breath-taking views and a lovely spot for relaxing. There are lots of other beautiful beaches within easy reach on Kefalonia, so why not explore a little?
Spartia itself is a tranquil destination where you can escape the world. If you want to combine relaxing with a bit of sightseeing, you’ll find plenty of great places to visit nearby.
The island’s historic capital, Argostoli, is just 15 minutes’ drive away. Admire the boats in the harbour, indulge in some retail therapy, or watch the sun go down from an open air bars or restaurants – pure bliss. Don’t miss a visit to the Italian War Memorial and the Italian ‘Divisione Acqui’ War Museum to learn about the Italian soldier who spent WWII here. Argostoli is a great place to enjoy some lively Greek culture, before heading back up the hill to the sanctuary of quiet Spartia.
This area is great for walking, with some lovely coastal walks to the coves and beaches either side of Spartia, or inland to the remains of St George’s castle or the Cyclopean Wall. The underground lake at La Fossa and the spectacular Drogarati Caves are a couple of the island’s most popular sights, or you could even try some island hopping with a visit to one of Kefalonia’s neighbouring islands, such as Lixouri, Lefkas or Zakynthos.
