There’s more to the Algarve than super beaches. And pretty Silves is a great place to discover some stylish sophistication and branch out to explore the local countryside. Colina dos Mouros is a great-value town-centre hotel that puts a particular focus on welcoming cycling guests.
Colina dos Mouros is beautifully placed to make the most of Silves’ biggest visual attraction, the hill-top castle that’s been a Roman, Moorish, and Portuguese fortress in its long history. Illuminated at night, it dominates the town and you’ll have fantastic views of it from the Colina dos Mouros. The sloping streets of the town are perfect for laid-back strolling, and there are lots of good restaurants to try. You’ll be pleased to hear that wine making is a local strength, and some vineyards are open to visitors.
You’ll enjoy good facilities at the Colina dos Mouros, including two pools (with a children’s pool, too). Reception staff will rent you a car to get you exploring. You can also rent bikes, though this is a hotel with a good cycling pedigree and many will bring their own to lodge in the hotel’s bicycle storage facilities.
Silves has low-key attractions. Locally you’ll find a small museum, and the castle is certainly worth a couple of hours of your time. It’s the countryside that’s the big attraction though, with horse riding as popular as two wheeled explorations.
Although it has no beach, Silves isn’t too far from some of the Algarve’s best, and the big attractions of Lagos, Portimão and Albufeira are easy to reach for day tripping purposes. Also nearby is the pretty town of Loule, whose Moorish market is a nice twin to Silvers’ castle.
The Colina dos Mouros hotel offers another way to look at the Algarve, and is wonderful value. Book your stay – with or without cycle – at great prices with Loveholidays.com.
