Introducing Holidays to Porches 2019
With its spectacular coastline and unspoilt beauty, there’s no better place to soak up the sunshine than on a holiday in Porches. A world away from the tourist areas of the Algarve, expect traditional charm and a unique character you won’t be able to resist.
Porches is renowned for its scenery, and with sandy coves and rocky shorelines, there’s plenty to discover in this part of the world. Whether you fancy a heady hike or a chance to lounge by the beach, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Away from the beach, you’ll find an array of restaurants and cafés serving up steaming bowls of local and international cuisine. And it won’t take long to find the perfect place for lingering over a cocktail or two once the sun goes down.
Porches is renowned for its Algarve pottery and unsurprisingly, you’ll find a number of workshops dotted throughout the village. Many of them are family-run and showcase the local handicraft, as well as providing beautiful souvenirs to take home to loved ones. The most famous workshop is Porches Pottery, and is not to be missed for its shelves of colourful designs.
Keen golfers will be in their element in Porches, as you’re never too far away from a green or two. Salgados Golf Course is a Links Course within close reach of Porches, boasting an 18-hole run situated directly behind the golden shores of Praia de Gale.
A holiday in Porches is simply incomplete without sampling the mouth-watering Portuguese cuisine. This part of the Algarve is renowned for its seafood and Cataplana - a hearty seafood stew which can be found in almost any restaurant across the region.
If you’re looking for something different, head to the village in July for the annual snail festival. The 5-day celebration focuses on the humble snail – a delicacy in the region often accompanied with chorizo, onions, tomatoes and herbs. Pay the small entry fee and you’ll even get a free plate of snails! Not your cup of tea? There are still plenty of food stalls to enjoy, as well as numerous live music acts that play well into the night.
A short walk will bring you to the beach, where you’ll uncover the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Rocha, a medieval fort. Steeped in history, this monument dates back to the 11th century and houses a fascinating ancient shrine to discover. Even if you’re not a budding historian, you won’t want to miss the fort’s picturesque backdrop. Visit around sunset and you’ll be treated to a particularly beautiful view – just don’t forget your camera!
