Panormo is a sleepy, unspoilt coastal village, and its’ main attractions are the delightful beaches and authentic Greek atmosphere that weaves through the winding streets, infuses the laughter of locals sipping ouzo in the taverna, and washes away any worldly woes. However, the village is also a fantastic base for exploring some of Crete’s headline attractions, so thrill seekers and historic culture vultures can enjoy their Panormo break as much as any beach bum.
The city of Rethymnon, Crete’s 3rd largest settlement, is a mere half hour away by car and bursting with fascinating architecture, museums, shops, bars, and it’s own stunning 12km stretch of golden sand. From the beautiful Venetian harbour to the striking fortress, Rethymnon has plenty to keep history buffs engaged and is a joy to wander around n days when you feel a little more adventurous. If you haven’t drunk your fill of history in the town, head to the ancient site of Eleftherna, a settlement which dates between the dark ages and Byzantine eras, and travel back in time to the very origins of life in Crete.
Active types can exploit the many watersports on offer in Rethymnon, or lace up their hiking boots and tackle Mount Ida, the highest mountain on Crete and less than an hours drive from Panormo. The village itself has the facilities for organised mountain bike hire, and you can even book a boat trip to neighbouring island Santorini.
Whatever you have in mind for your Crete holiday, Panormo is the pinnacle of a Greek island village and perfect for your 2018/2019 escape.
Panormos itself benefits from 3 sandy coves for visitors to choose from. One is in the town's harbour and all three boast soft sand, calm waters, and excellent access to facilities. The beaches are not the largest on Crete, and popular, but there is rarely a problem getting a sunbed, for which you pay a small fee at one of the cafes, and the atmosphere is both friendly and relaxed. The calm waters and gently sloping sands are ideal for children, while the beaches are also popular for those who enjoy snorkelling.
Should you want to expand your beach options, there are a plethora of nearby options to choose from. The characterful Venetian style city of Rethymnon, just half an hour away by car, has an impressive 12km of golden sands to offer visitors, along with some fantastic facilities, activities and architecture to enjoy.
Alternatively, 20 minutes driving in the opposite direction will deliver you to Bali (Crete) and the stunning Bali Beach, which rivals any it’s Caribbean counterpart can offer. These are just a few of the fabulous bays littering the coast of Crete and renting a car s strongly recommended to give you the freedom to explore them all.
