Padenghe Sul Garda Holidays
Lake beach, ancient castle, historic church – Padenghe Sul Garda, clinging to the south-east shore of Lake Garda, has it all. This pretty little village is a brilliant base for exploring the Valtenesi region, enjoying its beautiful landscapes, traditional towns, and perhaps fitting in a bit of golf between fabulous meals served with excellent local wines.
Italy’s lakeland is one of the country’s most beautiful areas and Lake Garda is its giant, the largest lake in the country and a long-established scenic and leisure travel destination. The area is characterised by gently rolling hills cloaked in vineyards and olive groves that profit from the lakes’ warming influence on the local climate.
There are lots of lovely little towns to explore – busy Desenzano, beautiful Sirmione, historic Gargnano – around the lake shore and myriad ways to get into or onto the water, especially at Riva del Garda, the lake’s best-established resort. If strolling or boating isn’t enough for you, head north or east for Alpine mountains or stay close to the lakeshore for some very good golfing. All to be enjoyed before a glass of Garda Classico, of course.
Padenghe Sul Garda Attractions
You won’t find an expanse of water like Lake Garda without finding people in wetsuits and this area is one of the best activity holiday areas in Italy. Sailing and windsurfing are the classic Lake Garda activities, but there are lots more options to explore, including fashionable kite surfing or adrenaline-pumping paragliding.
Lake Garda tastes as good as it looks. Freshwater fish, served with local olive oil, top local menus that have centuries of tradition behind them. Make sure you make the time to visit at least one local winery, lemon house or olive farm – they’re glad to welcome you, confident in the knowledge that those free samples will lead to a boot-full of purchases of top quality products.
Such an attractive place to live has been a busy area well back into pre-history. Padenghe Sul Garda boasts its own fine castle and there are beautiful villas and gardens all around the lake, notably Palazzo Bettoni in Gargnano, and the more sinister Vittoriale degli Italiani, the model estate of the controversial nationalist poet Gabriele d’Annunzio in Gardone Riviera. Among the Ancient Roman remains, the Villa Romana in Sirmione is one of the finest sites in northern Italy.
Not to be Missed on a Padenghe Sul Garda Holiday
Right on your doorstep in Padenghe Sul Garda is one of Italy’s very best olive oil houses, Comincioli. With five centuries in the same family, these people are experts and their oils legendary. The hillside olive groves make a beautiful setting for sampling one of Italy’s finest products.
The houses of the oldest part of the village cluster inside Castello di Padenghe. This fortress may have ancient roots, but the current structures are remnants of a period of warring city states. While small, the still inhabited houses with their tiny lanes inside the walls are beautiful, and the views of the lake are superb.
Azienda Agricola Zuliani matches the Cominciolis’ longevity and expertise, this time in wine making. Their wines – including the local rose-coloured Chiaretto – are much sought after, and tours and tastings take in beautiful, small vineyards, and impressive, historic cellars.
