Marrakech Top Attraction: History and Culture

Founded in 1062, several dynasties contributed to extraordinary monuments and traditions that make Marrakech a history buff’s dream.

Originally built as the burial ground for the sixth Sultan of the Saadi Dynasty, the Saadian Tombs are a sumptuous display of wood carvings, domed ceilings and colourful tile mosaics. Two main mausoleums contain 66 tombs and rose gardens feature graves of the royal household.
Established for more than four centuries, the Ben Youssef Madrasa housed around 900 students at its peak. It was among the largest theological colleges in North Africa. You’ll discover historic dormitory rooms and Islamic art in the central courtyard.
Huge hanging lanterns, carved ceilings and ornamental doorways decorate the grand former palace that houses the Museum of Marrakech. Discover books, pottery and art representing Moroccan Jewish, Arab and Berber cultures.
Get your camera ready for a shot beneath the giant horse-shaped archway of Bab Agnaou. Constructed in the 12th century, it’s one of the city’s original gates that provided access to the Royal Kasbah.

Nightlife in Marrakech

Marrakech glitters by night, starting with the circus-like atmosphere of Jemaa el-Fnaa. Moving inside, elegant piano bars, theatres and dance clubs get the party started.

Winston Churchill and Franklin D Roosevelt spent time at La Mamounia hotel, hence Bar Churchill’s memorable name. Leopard-print carpet and sultry jazz tunes add to the old-world charm of this perennially popular nightlife venue.
The upscale neighbourhood of Hivernage is the place to go for glamorous nightclubs, a casino and restaurants featuring belly dancers and DJs.
Trendy nightclubs, bars and bistros are clustered around Avenue Mohammed V in Gueliz, with a European vibe. If you need a quick fix of regular fast food, you’ll find it in the new town also.
The place to see and be seen is the famous Bo&Zin, with a stunning outdoor dining area for Asian, French and North African dishes. Guest DJs kick off the dancing after dinner.
Alcohol is strictly prohibited in public, including many outdoor terraces on the streets. However, most bars, restaurants and hotels serving tourists offer all your favourite alcohol drinks.

Food and Drink in Marrakech

If you're feeling adventurous, try Moroccan snails. They're a favourite among locals at street stalls and served in a peppery broth called babbouche.
