A classic Maltese hotel, the Sunflower Hotel offers great-value, three-star facilities in one of the Mediterranean island’s most popular resorts. In the typical local style, the Sunflower is high-rise – six storeys – and is topped off with a roof-top pool that puts lovely sea views into your swimming experience. There’s another pool inside, to complement some spa facilities and treatments.
There are some Maltese touches in the room décor, in rooms that all include private balconies, air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, WiFi access (for a charge) and more. A friendly front desk will keep you informed about the hotel’s entertainment programme, and how to get the most out of your visit to this northern part of Malta.
The Sunflower is in the Qawra area of the St Paul’s Bay, which is made up of a trio of resorts. Malta has a beautiful coastline, but beaches are rare, and most of the coast around Qawra is rocky. That doesn’t make the waters any less inviting, though, and a long sea-front prom is one of the resort’s prettiest attractions.
While Qawra has plenty of life – including a casino – you’ll find more in the way of nightlife in St Julian’s, a short drive away. Or you could head over to St Paul’s itself, where you’ll find the most historic part of the town, the area’s only sandy beach, and some good quality water sports facilities.
Further afield, the island’s interior isn’t to be ignored, and there’s a growing adventure-tourism scene. Valletta, the island’s stunning capital can be reached by road or by boat and is one of the Mediterranean’s finest historic cities, with a cultural scene that has won it European Capital of Culture status for 2017.
