A beguiling region of northeastern Greece with three distinctive and beautiful peninsulas, Halkidiki offers everything you could want from your Greek holiday.

Spread out into the azure Aegean Sea, Halkidiki has a craggy coastline with well developed resorts perfect for family holidays, hidden coves for something more sedate and towering mountains with monastic communities and incredible views. The region has hot, dry summers and relatively warm winters, making it a great year-round destination for getting out into nature.

History in Halkidiki

Greek myth comes alive in Halkidiki, with two of its three peninsulas supposedly created by ancient giants, and another taking its name – Sithonia – from the son of Poseidon. Today, you can visit the fascinating ruins at Stagira, a city formed more than 2,500 years ago that was the birthplace of great philosopher, Aristotle.

There’s so much to do in Halkidiki beyond its gorgeous beaches, with 3,000 years of history to explore and a smattering of pretty villages to visit.

  • Arnaia is one of the prettiest villages in Halkidiki, with important historical sites and traditional Mecedonian architecture. See the 19th-century school and the Mansion of Arnaia, which hosts a fascinating folklore museum inside.
  • A largest, oldest village on the Sithonia Peninsula, Sykia is a gorgeous little village with historic highlights. The temple of Agios Athanasios is a must-visit before sampling some meze and fresh fish in the many tavernas.
  • History buffs will love the Archaeological Museum of Polygyros, where archaeological finds from across the region are on display in engaging exhibits.
  • Sitting on a 75-metre-high rock on the more developed Kassandra Peninsula is the village of Athitos, where cobbled alleyways and pretty churches offer a traditional feel. Visit the Folklore Museum to learn about the region and enjoy mesmerising views out to the Toroneos Gulf.
  • Take a cruise around Mount Athos, where around 2,000 monks live in a collection of monasteries and hermitages atop a rock.

Blue seas and deep green pine forests characterise the mountainous landscape of Halkidiki, and so exploring the natural wonders of this region is a must.

  • At 1,165 metres, Mount Cholomontas is a great hiking destination. Hit the trails through pine forests, smell the wildflowers and herbs, and stop for a picnic at scenic viewpoints.
  • A wealth of fossils and intriguing red rock formations make fascinating viewing inside the Petralona Cave. Visit the Anthropological Museum next door to learn about the archaeological findings discovered here.

  • Birders should beeline for the Sani Wetlands, where a 2.5km trail traverses grassy marshes and ponds. You might spot purple herons, black-winged stilts and even turtles, plus 200 other bird species.
  • Mount Stratoniko is a brilliant place for wildlife watching, as roebuck deer, wild boar and hares inhabit the forests here amid ancient oak and beech trees.
