Your guide to Gerani holidays
Gerani is a quiet, appealing seaside resort set amid citrus groves and orchards, about 8 miles west of Chania Town on Crete's beautiful northern coast. Its long sandy beach has plenty of facilities and offers a range of water sports, and its western tip is a nesting site for endangered sea turtles. You’ll find a good choice of wonderful cafés and traditional taverns in Gerani, both along the seafront and in the charming and historic village set just inland. If you’re looking for a wider range of nightlife, head to the nearby resort of Platanias, or visit the enchanting historic capital of Chania Town. This is Crete’s second city, wrapped around a beautiful Venetian harbour, and is packed with great shops, bars and restaurants. If you want to escape the crowds, head into the hills inland, where you’ll find tiny villages that have barely been touched by time.
The beach in Gerani is a lovely long stretch of sand and fine pebbles that extends for more than two kilometres. It’s very well equipped, with plenty of sun beds and umbrellas to rent, plus beach bars and life guards. You’ll also be able to take part in all kinds of water sports, whether you fancy paddle boarding or sea kayaking. Part of the beach is a nesting site during the summer months for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle. The beach extends east into the neighbouring resorts of Platanias and Agia Marina – so you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to places to soak up the sun. If you are looking for more peace and seclusion, head east towards Maleme to find some quieter stretches of beach.
