If you’re looking for a holiday destination with not only an attractive, lively seafront, but also a wealth of cultural activities and amenities, look no further than Costa Blanca’s charming town of Cartagena. As one of the world’s deepest ports, the ancient city of Cartagena is a hive of maritime activity with a thriving fishing scene and you’ll often see majestic liners being welcomed to the port. History buffs will be delighted at the town’s offering of museums and historical sites and visitors can enjoy the spectacular sight of the town’s ancient Roman Amphitheatre, amongst a wealth of other archaeological sites. The idyllic shoreline, dotted in palm trees, is picture perfect, and those preferring a more leisurely day in the sun will not be disappointed by Cartagena’s many award winning beaches. With less than a three hour flight from the UK, holidaymakers will not be able to find a destination offering such reliably good weather, famous Spanish nightlife and hospitality, and sandy shores quite like Cartagena.
Cartagena holds the distinguished accolade of being Spain’s most highly regarded beach town; with ten of the area’s sandy spots being awarded for their quality. If that isn’t enough to get you down to the shoreline, consider the promise of clear blue waters, quiet coves and plenty of opportunity for both sunbathing and exploring.
If you’re more at home in the water than alongside it, there are tourist boat tours on offer, and even a nudist beach for brave bathers. However, families may be more at home on the beaches of Playa Punta Brava and Playa los Urrutias, where there are plenty of amenities, as well as stretching, wide plains of sand perfect for little ones. Nearby Cala Cortina offers activities for all, including the perfect place to snorkel, with plenty of clear diving spots and a beautiful cove for treasure hunting!
There is so much more to Cartagena than award winning beaches, and the town is worth a visit for its historical merit alone. From Roman ruins to handsome architecture, there is plenty to see and learn in this diverse city. Stunning baroque and neoclassical buildings prove the town’s military importance, and can be seen around the old town if one is looking for them. Cartagena’s most iconic landmarks include the Art Nouveau City Hall, Grand Hotel, and Casino and are a tourist attraction in their own right. By far the most fascinating sight of all is the Roman Amphitheatre- dating back to the first century- which is an absolute must-see, as well as the accompanying museum. If you’re hungry for more history following the Amphitheatre and its museum, try the Municipal Archaeological museum and the Arqua (National Museum of Maritime Archaeology).
If exploring this historical town leaves tummies rumbling, there is a great offering of restaurants and cafés around the town, from tapas to seafood, as well as bars and nightclubs to see party animals into the small hours. Take a stroll through the old streets and choose one of Cartagena’s atmospheric bistros for supper, or wander along the pretty promenade and pick up something lighter. Whatever you decide to do during your time in this Cartegna, it’s sure to be an unforgettable holiday for all.
