Austria Holidays 2020

Holidays to Austria offer some of the most picturesque views you can get. The country is filled with both enchanting villages perched high up in the mountains and traditional cities which flaunt a colourful past. Austria’s capital of Vienna sits along the Danube River and is home to wonderfully designed baroque architecture. Sleek palaces give the city a pristine look, whilst adding to its rich list of culture. Austria is most notably recognised for its contributions to art and music. So, it comes as no surprise that many of the country’s museums house various art collections. As well as highlighting the many famous classical musicians that could trace their past back to Austria. Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss are among the many that have called Austria home.

Aside from the country’s cultural accolades, there are still plenty of other exciting sights to see. Austria holidays are perfect to explore nature, once you head out of the city and dive straight into its other regions. Explore the Bohemian Forest and alpine landscapes which will have you discovering the bright corners of Austria. Winter sports are also another fun way to make the most out of your holiday in Austria.

Things to do in Austria

Glorious palaces light up the Austrian capital and many of them house fascinating museums. But, whilst there is plenty to explore in Vienna, there is also an abundance of natural beauty dotted around Austria. From city halls and trendy museums to alpine lakes and hilltop fortresses. You couldn’t ask for anywhere better that blends the city with the outdoors.

  • Hohensalzburg Fortress – Built in the 11th-century, this fortress is located on a hilltop providing fairtytale-esque charm and stunning views of Salzburg and the Alps.
  • Museumsquartier – A wonderful district in Vienna, offering bespoke baroque buildings and some of the city’s best museums.
  • Lake Wolfgang – This lake offers amazing views of the surrounding mountains and glistening waters.
  • Schönbrunn Palace – Wonderful baroque palace which offers tours during the summer. Complemented by lush gardens and maze.
  • Karlskirche – 18th-century cathedral which includes a viewing platform for visitors.
When to go

When to go

As Austria is home to both urban and rural areas, the best time of year to visit depends on where you’ll be visiting. Generally, Austria pulls in tourists during two different seasons, the summer and the winter. Summers in Austria are generally quite warm, so, the mountain resorts attract summer hikers and the cities attract those preferring great weather to sightsee. The winter is yet another fantastic time to go on a holiday to Austria for a couple of reasons. Firstly, those looking for a winter sports adventure can rely on Austria’s ski resorts to be covered in snow from around November until April. Secondly, Vienna has some of the best Christmas markets in Europe, making it an attractive choice for many travellers. Aside from that, winter can be quite a wet and cold time to head to the country.
