Argostoli Holidays at a Glance
The beautiful Greek island of Kefalonia has become famous around the world as the setting of Louis de Berniere’s bestselling novel, ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’. Anyone who has watched the movie adaptation of the book will have been captivated by the pretty beaches, the sparkling seas, and the rambling olive groves. Step into this gorgeous setting for yourself with a holiday to Kefalonia’s capital, Argostoli. This scenic harbour town is a fantastic mix of Greek traditional charm and modern comforts. Stroll through the winding streets, watch the boats sail by in the harbour, browse the shops selling everything from local crafts to tempting sweet treats, and soak up the atmosphere as the sun goes down in one of the many open air bars and restaurants. With everything from nightlife to historic monuments, Argostoli is a lively destination – and of course, those stunning Greek beaches are never far away!
Life’s a beach on an Argostoli Holiday
Argostoli has a lovely small beach near the marina but when you’re visiting Kefalonia you can’t help but want to explore the hundreds of beaches along the coastline. Some are sandy and some are pebbly, but all of them are beautiful. Follow the coastal road to Lassi and you’ll find lots of secluded sandy coves to relax in. For larger beaches with great amenities, the nearby Kalamia, Gradakia and Platis Yialos beaches in the resort of Lassi are within easy reach and offer beachfront cafes, watersports and sun loungers. For a tranquil beach with spectacular views, Vouti Beach is a hidden treasure away from the crowds. Families will love the clean, shallow waters and soft sands of Spasmata Beach, just fifteen minutes’ drive from Argostoli. There’s a beach bar for refreshments and umbrellas for shade – perfect for the little ones!
Top Argostoli Attractions
Kefalonia has a fascinating and turbulent past. Wars, earthquakes and invasions have all made their mark on this tiny island. Take a visit to the Italian War Memorial and the Italian ‘Divisione Acqui’ War Museum to learn more about the real story behind Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and the role the Italian soldiers played in WWII here. Or delve further into the ancient past with a trip to the Cyclopean Wall, a hilltop wall made up of large stones that makes for a lovely walk.
If nature is more your thing, visit La Fossa to see the underground lake, or head out to sea one morning from Argostoli Bay to try and see wild loggerhead turtles swimming in the clear waters. Outside of Argostoli, Kefalonia has some great sights for a day trip, including the spectacular Drogarati Caves just 40 minutes’ drive away, the booming harbour town of Fiskado, where you can mingle with the rich and glamourous, and the island’s most famous beach – Myrtos Beach. Or why not hop on a ferry and explore the neighbouring islands of Lixouri, Lefkas or Zakynthos?
