The gateway to the Algarve, Faro is one of Portugal's best-loved and beautiful areas. With cheap flights to Faro available in 2018, visiting the region gives you the opportunity to explore one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. Some of the excellent places you can reach from Faro include Albufeira, Vilamoura and Lagos. Due to the warm climate, landing in Faro means you can have the perfect December holiday away from the cold.
As the major airport in the Algarve, many tourists fly into the city's airport before heading off in search of the plethora of wonderful attractions this part of Portugal has to offer. World-class golf courses, sensational beaches, dramatically rugged coastal cliffs and delicious seafood are the main reasons thousands flock to the Algarve every year, and Faro provides the perfect base from which to do so. By renting a car, you can pretty much cover the majority of the coastal Algarve in a week, with Faro to Sagres - one of the most easterly towns in the region - taking approximately one hour and thirty minutes to drive.
Tavira is one of the most interesting cities in the Algarve. From the centre of Tavira, you can catch the local boat to Ilha de Tavira, an island with beautiful views of the river.
Book a flight with a last minute deal to save more for long beach days, head out with the whole gang on a family holiday to the Algarve's finest beaches, try an all inclusive holiday to Vilamoura if you want ultra-relaxation, or use our clever search engine to find the cheapest holidays year-round.
Velha Faro's walled old town (Cidade Velha) is a charming part of the city well worth spending the afternoon in. As you walk up through the Arco Vila, you'll come to the main square where the grand old Cathedral stands. Climb the stone staircase to the top for brilliant panoramic views of Faro. Dotted around these small, winding streets you'll find lots of little tavernas, serving a variety of dishes from traditional seafood to Portuguese tapas. Faro's diverse history is explained within the magnificent walls of the Museo Municipal and there's also a small art gallery displaying the works of contemporary artists from the country.
A twenty-minute bus journey out of Faro takes you to Praia do Faro. Here, the lovely white sand goes for miles in both directions and the sea's waves make for great fun to splash around in. As well as the usual beach-related activities, there are places along the sand where you can try your hand at water sports as well as a number of little cafes to grab some food - grilled sardines are a local favourite and worth a try for seafood lovers.
Named after the cast iron cooking dish it is prepared in, cataplana is a sumptuous seafood stew comprising the freshest ingredients from the nearby sea. Many restaurants in the area serve this delectable dish as it is a local speciality of the Algarve.
The Algarve is best known for its golf courses, and for good reason. As well as their incredible condition, these greens also happen to be surrounded by some truly beautiful views. Vilamoura is said to have some of the best golf in the country, with the Oceanica resort boasting four top-quality courses. Closer to Faro, you will find the San Lorenzo course which has some of the best surroundings for golf in Europe. Looking out over the Atlantic, these fairways are a part of the Ria Formosa marshland where beautiful pines and birdlife add to the peaceful nature of this green.
