Holidays are all about relaxation and enjoyment, and, for many of us, holiday ‘exercise’ consists of a 2-minute walk to the pool and the effort expended in lifting a cocktail to our lips. But there’s no reason why you shouldn’t make the most of your holiday – AND come back fitter and in better shape than ever! All it takes is a little bit of creative thinking to find effortless ways of incorporating exercise into your day. 1. Sightsee on foot or by bike
Whether you’re on a city break or heading to a fabulous beach resort, you can make the most of your holiday by exploring your surroundings on foot or by bike rather than simply jumping in the hire car or shuttle bus. Do a little research before you arrive to find the best walking routes and bike paths in your area. An easy way to introduce a little gentle exercise is by taking a longer route when you’re walking down to the beach, or enjoying a sunset stroll along the water’s edge to get yourself in shape.
2. Use nature as your gym
If you’re a gym bunny back at home, do your work-outs on the beach or in a city park. There are scores of fantastic activities you can do while on holiday that will keep you in great shape, from water sports to horse-riding. Why not try paddle boarding, which is great for your core, or take some wind-surfing lessons? If you’re not big on water sports, you could go horse-riding, cycling, have a game of tennis or even go roller-blading! If you’re an adrenaline junkie, find out what adventure activities are available in the region – climbing, canyoning, or rafting are some of the options. Just make sure you’re out in the fresh air, doing something active and getting those endorphins flowing!
3. Pack a skipping rope
It’s already hard enough to get everything in your suitcase when you’re going on holiday without trying to fit in some fitness equipment. The answer could be a skipping rope – small, easy to tuck in a shoe, and you can use it anywhere! Skipping has lots of amazing benefits: it’s a great cardio workout, tones muscle and improves balance, agility and coordination. Plus, it can burn up to 1300 calories an hour!
4. Make the most of your hotel’s facilities
If you’re into health and fitness, chances are that you have carefully selected a hotel that offers plenty of facilities so that you don’t have to interrupt your work out routine. Some hotels have fantastic gyms with personal trainers and every amenity, or maybe a spa where you can enjoy a deep muscle massage. Find out what water sports are on offer, and whether the hotel arranges other activities in the area. Some hotels offer yoga or pilates classes, or organise aquarobics sessions. If there’s a pool, try and get in a few laps before the crowds descend.
5. Watch what you eat
Most of us come back from holidays with an extra pound or two! (Who wants to live on carrot sticks when they’re on holiday?!) Plus, a big part of going on holiday is enjoying all the delicious local cuisine and you won’t want to miss out on that. To keep those extra pounds off, be a bit more savvy when it comes to choosing what to eat. Stick to fresh seafood and salads where possible, and choose grilled rather than fried foods. Don’t let yourself be tempted by the buffets at the all-inclusive hotels and just fill a small plate (you can always go back if you’re still hungry!). Choose fresh fruit for dessert, and make sure you drink plenty of water. But don’t be too hard on yourself – you’re on holiday after all!
