    Part wine shop, part deli and entirely enchanting, this is currently one of Rome’s most fashionable haunts. You can enjoy a superb glass of wine – the choice is huge and changes daily – at the bar, perhaps accompanied by a platter of some of the carefully selected cheeses and cured meats, or dine on the excellent contemporary cuisine in the small, adjoining dining room.     Armando al Pantheon

    Just a 2-minute walk from the Pantheon, this beloved trattoria has been in the same family for more than half a century. Its wonderfully old-fashioned wood-panelled dining room is the perfect place to tuck into Roman classics such as carciofi alla romana – artichokes simmered with mint and garlic – or ossbucco con piselli (veal shank with peas).

    Chef Sarah Cicolini offers authentic, flavourful Roman dishes in this welcoming, modern trattoria, which is set in the chilled-out yet central San Giovanni neighbourhood. The day’s specials are chalked up on the blackboard, and are accompanied by a well-chosen list of local wines and craft beers. Young and upbeat, it’s currently one of the most talked-out new restaurants in town.

    Da Francesco

    This is another classic Roman trattoria, offering a huge choice of pizzas and pasta dishes. The food is simple, but freshly prepared with local ingredients and zings with flavour. It’s handily located near the Piazza Navona, and is so popular that there are always queues at opening time.

    La Pergola

    If you want to push the boat out on a spectacular gourmet meal, then La Pergola – Rome’s only restaurant with 3 Michelin stars – is the place to do it. Set in the plush surroundings of the Roma Cavalieri hotel, it offers a stunning panorama of the city with stellar cuisine to match. Chef Heinz Beck masterful creations are exquisite and perfectly balanced, and every mouthful will linger long in the memory.

    There are several contenders for best pizza al taglio (‘pizza by the slice’) in Rome, but Gabriele Bonci’s emporium takes the prize. A renowned baker (don’t miss a visit to his bakery on Via Trionfale), Bonci’s pizza dough is spectacularly good, and comes with a daily-changing list of gourmet toppings. Expect queues for pizza this delicious.

    Nonna Betta

    Tucked away in Rome’s Jewish quarter, Nonna Betta serves up traditional kosher dishes prepared to old family recipes passed down through generations. It’s a dim and atmospheric spot, perfect for enjoying tasty house specialities like fried artichokes, stuffed courgette flowers, or cacio e pepe con cicoria (pasta with a local green).

    Tavernaccia Da Bruno

    Slightly off the beaten track, this simple trattoria in Trastevere (one of Rome’s most enchanting neighbourhoods) has been offering authentic Roman food and a convivial atmosphere for over 40 years. Go for roast suckling pig, a house speciality, and finish up with the melt-in-the-mouth pistachio and ricotta cake.
