    Holiday smackdown: Lanzarote vs Fuerteventura

    The Canary Islands always make for a fantastic holiday destination, suitable for families, couples and groups. These Spanish islands located off the western coast of North Africa have so much to offer from beaches, natural landscapes and fun activities. With many islands to choose from, there are a distinct four which remain popular along this archipelago. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are wonderful options; however, you may be stuck between the close neighbours of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Don’t get us wrong… it’s a strong contest between these two Canary Islands. But, we’re here to help make your choice easier! Who’ll win in this holiday smackdown? Let’s find out!


    Lanzarote: One of the main attractions of the Canary Islands is without a doubt the beaches. Who doesn’t love to take a dip in the warm waters and feel the soft sand between your toes. The island boasts some wonderfully unique black sand beaches. Perhaps, Lanzarote’s most well-known beach is Playa de Papagayo. Famed for its crystal-clear waters and beautiful surroundings, it’s a must-see, sandy haven.

    Fuerteventura: On the other hand, Fuerteventura is perhaps best-known for its beaches. In fact, out of all the Canary Islands, it has been said that Fuerteventura has some of the most stunning beaches across the archipelago, making it a must-visit for beach bums! In particular, Costa Calma and Corralejo highlight the best of Fuerteventura.

    Winner: Both islands have lovely beaches, but Fuerteventura pips Lanzarote on this one! Golden sands and enticing waters make Fuerteventura the place to go when it comes to beaches.

    Lanzarote: The great thing about Lanzarote is its diverse landscapes. If you love the outdoors, this island is a definite must-see. Whether you’re intrigued by the fascinating views from cliffs or the volcanic terrain, there is plenty to go around. Visit the Timanfaya National Park which boasts the island’s volcanic landscapes.

    Fuerteventura: There are a range of landscapes to discover in Fuerteventura. Most deservedly, its beaches take centre stage. The Corralejo Nature Reserve is not only the base of some of the island’s best beaches, but it is lined with sand dunes which attract many visitors in their own right.

    Winner: Who wins this battle? It’s got to be Lanzarote! Fuerteventura has beautiful landscapes but the diverse range that can be found in Lanzarote is unmatched and as a result takes the prize.

    Lanzarote: There is plenty fun to be had in Lanzarote, especially when it comes to watersports. Most importantly, avid surfers will enjoy a trip to this Canary Island. Playa Famara is one of the top places to surf, attracting professional surfers from all around the world. Its lovely weather all year round and huge waves mean surfing is the number one priority when it comes to watersports in Lanzarote.

    Fuerteventura: On the other hand, Fuerteventura is the better location for watersports like snorkelling and windsurfing. The island is typically windier, making it a true nirvana for windsurfers. Moreover, you will find clear and shallow waters in Fuerteventura which create perfect conditions for snorkelling. Plus, with loads of marine life to discover, this is something you don’t want to miss out on!

    Winner: Both islands are fantastic for watersports, but based off of variety, Fuerteventura wins this one for us! It’s a great location for both beginners and experts. Also, no matter what your interests are, you’ll be sure to find a watersport activity for you.
