Best places to holiday in May

We’ve come up with an essential guide to the best places to holiday in May – the perfect time to get away! The sun is shining, everything is green and lush, and nowhere is too crowded. It’s the perfect month for a relaxing break, a half-term holiday with the kids, or a romantic escape. Spain, Portugal, Greece and Cyprus are top choices for a May holiday, thanks to the combination of guaranteed sunshine and affordability. If you’re looking for something a bit a different, how about heading to Marrakech, the beautiful ‘Rose City’, or visiting the ever-popular Dubai, home to glittering skyscrapers, desert adventures and blissful beaches? If you’re dreaming of the holiday of a lifetime, consider the island paradise of the Seychelles, with their heavenly beaches of white sand and intense blue seas?

Spain ticks all the boxes when it comes to holidays in the sun. Fantastic resorts to suit all tastes and ages, plenty of guaranteed sunshine, great food and wonderful rural areas to escape the crowds if you are in the mood for adventure. Top choices include the Canaries: perhaps the stunning volcanic island of Lanzarote, with its amazing black sand beaches, or beautiful Tenerife, which combines luxuriant forest, Spain’s highest peak and sweeping stretches of golden sand. Or sleepier Fuerteventura, with its protected turquoise waters? Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, is another fantastic option: a host of fabulous resorts, a charming capital, and a rugged, tranquil hinterland that is a delight to explore on foot, by bike or by car. Ibiza will be gearing up for the summer, but is still wonderfully uncrowded and unhurried in May – although you’ll still be able to party if you’re in the mood.

The Algarve boasts a dramatic coastline with superb beaches, lively resorts (many of which preserve enchanting historic quarters), and a host of attractions for all the family from water parks and water sports to dolphin-watching cruises. Faro is one of its most popular resorts, a vibrant party town in high season, but a little quieter and less frenetic in May, when you’ll be able stroll through its charming old town and enjoy drinks and meals out on the café terraces.

May is the perfect month to visit Greece, particularly if you’re looking for a holiday that combines beaches with activities such as hiking. The island of Corfu is a riot of colour in late spring, when wildflowers carpet the meadows and the forests are lush and green. The temperature is perfect for hiking and biking – but, if you prefer to stretch out by the beach, it’s also warm enough to simply lie back and relax. Zante is another great choice, with a lovely, rural hinterland and a breathtaking coastline with a wide array of resorts and beaches.

    City Breaks

City breaks can be a fantastic way to recharge batteries – a spot of shopping, eating out in local restaurants, soaking up some culture, and enjoying the sunshine. The Moroccan cities of Marrakech and Casablanca are ideal for a May holiday, offering plenty of exotic things to do along with balmy temperatures. Plunge into the Marrakech medina, haggle in the souks and admire the death-defying antics of the fire-jugglers and acrobats in the stunning main square, Djemaa-el-Fna. In magical Casablanca, you can linger in Art Deco cafés, marvel at the daily catch in the market, and sip cocktails from a roof terrace with the city spread out at your feet.

Istanbul, at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, is endlessly fascinating: admire the glittering treasures in the Aya Sofia museum, visit the Blue Mosque, or get lost in the narrow alleys of the bazaars. If you like your cities to come with fabulous beaches, then head to Dubai: this glittering contemporary city is packed with some of the world’s tallest skyscrapers, but also preserves an alluring historic quarter. You can relax on the Caribbean-style white-sand beaches, or take an unforgettable desert safari to watch the stars.
