We’ve rounded up the top 10 family-friendly resorts in Europe, whether you’re looking for a laid-back beach holiday, somewhere with enough action to keep the teens happy, or hoping to mix up a little culture with your fun-in-the-sun escape.

    Albufeira, Algarve

The Algarve has long been one of the most popular destinations for family holidays. For a start, there are the beaches, water sports, historic towns and boat trips plus a whole host of fantastic fun-filled family attractions like water parks. All the resorts cater for families, but Albufeira stands out as one of the best to suit kids of all ages. The spectacular sandy beaches are the biggest draw, with lots of water sports for tweens and teens, plus boat trips, dolphin-watching trips and a pretty old town to explore. Older teens will love the shopping and nightlife, making it a perfect all-round holiday destination.

    Puerto Pollensa, Majorca

Spread around a spectacular bay, Puerto Pollensa is an idyllic resort for a relaxed family holiday in the sun. A former fishing village, it’s now a charming seaside town with all the amenities to ensure a stress-free holiday, such as restaurants, bars and shops. The shallow waters are perfect for toddlers, and there are lots of activities from water sports to hiking trails to keep active older kids happy too.

    Cala’n Porter, Menorca

Menorca is the quietest of the Balearic Islands, with a spectacular and blissfully unspoilt coastline. Cala’n Porter is a top choice for a relaxed family holiday in gorgeous surroundings. It’s just a short drive from the airport, so transfers are a doddle, and it has one of the loveliest sandy beaches on the island. You’ll find everything you need in the resort, but Menorca’s beautiful capital is easy to reach for some fun sightseeing.

    Agios Georgios, Corfu

Sitting pretty on Corfu’s marvellous northern coast, Aghios Georgios is a beautiful and relaxed resort tucked into a bay. Framed by pine-covered hills, it boasts more fabulous sandy beaches, with clear, shallow waters that are ideal for children. It’s a quiet and tranquil place, but you’ll still find plenty to keep the kids entertained from every possible water sport to a bowling alley.

    Los Cristianos, Tenerife

Los Cristianos is one of the biggest resorts on the stunning island of Tenerife, with loads to offer everyone in the family. The beaches are endless, backed by a long palm-shaded promenade, and you’ll find a huge range of water sports, boat trips, diving excursions and much more to keep the kids happily entertained. It’s also just a few minutes’ drive from one of the biggest and best water parks in Spain, Siam Park, is one of the island’s top attractions.

    Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Playa Blanca, on the southern coast of the glorious island of Lanzarote, is a magical place for a family holiday. It’s now one of the biggest resorts of the island, but has managed to hang onto much of its authentic charm. Boat trips depart from the buzzy marina, and you can take your pick from the main beach, which has every possible amenity, to lots of quieter unspoilt beaches nearby if you’re looking for peace and quiet.

    Javea, Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca is famous for its long sandy beaches – those at Benidorm are spectacular – but Javea offers a different kind of Spanish beach holiday with its magical little coves and bays. Lively enough to keep teens happy in the shops and cafés, it’s also got some fantastic hikes and cliff top walks if you’re an active family.

    Marbella, Costa del Sol

Marbella is the belle of the Costa del Sol, an enchanting whitewashed town scented with orange blossom with stunning beaches. It’s a brilliant choice if you’re travelling with teens, with lots of nightlife, fabulous shops, but the beaches are also ideal for younger kids too. You can visit the wonderful ‘white villages’ inland, take boat trips, check out the super yachts in the marina, and there are lots of family attractions like water parks and theme parks within easy reach.

    Mellieha Bay, Malta

Malta’s best sandy beach is found at Mellieha Bay, which is an idyllic family-friendly destination. The beach shelves gently, making it perfect for even the youngest kids, and the atmosphere is relaxed and low-key. The hotels here are well geared to families, with pools and special entertainment for the little ones. Malta is a tiny island, so everywhere is within an easy day trip, if you fancy visiting some of the enchanting cities like Valletta or Mdina.

    Cefalù, Sicily

Sicily is easily one of our favourite destinations for holidays with the family. Beaches, ice-cream, volcanoes and oodles of sunshine make it fun for kids of all ages! Cefalù’s beach is a gorgeous swathe of golden sand, with lots of water sports and handy amenities. And the old town is one of the prettiest on the island, full of inviting cafés and lovely squares where you can sit out with some of the famous gelato.
