11 Weird and Wonderful Reasons to Visit Jamaica

With happy-go-lucky people, a world-famous music scene and stunning beaches, there are plenty of obvious reasons to head to this Caribbean favourite, but there are plenty of other lesser-known reasons too. Here are some weird and wonderful reasons to visit Jamaica this year.

    1. It has the oldest golf club in the Western Hemisphere

The Manchester Golf Club was founded in 1865 and stretches over 55 acres of rolling hills where you can enjoy stunning vistas and an all-round pretty cool game of golf.

    2. You’re very unlikely to encounter a snake

Since the introduction of the Mongoose in 1872 (which was initially meant to sort out a rat problem), snakes have also been under threat which meant a massive drop in the serpents appearance on the island.

    3. Rum is the national drink

And there isn’t really a better drink to enjoy in the Caribbean. It’s the perfect excuse to take it home as a ‘souvenir’ too.

    4. Because it’s the ideal place to be (or imagine you are) a secret agent

Ian Fleming wrote all 14 James Bond novels in his Jamaican hideaway which he dubbed ‘GoldenEye’, ‘Dr. No’ and that iconic white bikini moment was even shot in Ocho Rios! Did I hear ‘re-enactment opportunity’?

    5. Jamaica is part of the British Commonwealth

This means no visa worries! British citizens get 90 days entry for free and it also means that English is the official language so there’s no need to buy those pocket phrase books!

    6. Blue Mountains

Like the Blue Mountains in Australia, but a lot closer to home, there are Blue Mountains in Jamaica too where you can even see the outline of Cuba on a clear day!

    7. Jamaica has the second largest butterfly species

The Giant Swallowtail is one of the island’s native butterflies and can reach up to 6 inches long!

    8. Because there is such a thing as hummingbird feedings

Most of us have tried lamb feedings, but in Jamaica you can actually try hummingbird feeding. The Rocklands Bird Sanctuary is where you can feed the tiny winged creature’s sugar water. Not to big it up too much, but it’s probably one of the most magical animal experiences you’ll ever have.

    9. The island is home to some of the most beautiful women in the world

Jamaica is number five on the list of countries with the most Miss World titles, so guys, if you’re looking for a holiday romance then Jamaica is probably a pretty great place to go.

    10. There’s no set rainy season

Though this is a tropical island, Jamaica doesn’t actually have a wet season. There will of course be the occasional rainy day, typically Jamaica is seen as having a year round summer so don’t forget to pack that sun cream whenever you plan on going!

    11. There’s a pretty good chance you’ll see a blue moon

The phenomenon that coined the phrase ‘once in a blue moon’ is an extremely rare occurrence but in Jamaica it has actually been spotted half a dozen times in the past 40 years.

For keen-golfers, animal-lovers and rum-drinkers there are plenty of great reasons to ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ and head to the tropical country this year. If you’re planning a holiday to Jamaica, let us know by commenting below!
