The stylish Azul Beach Resort Riviera Maya scores top marks for luxury. It’s got a clutch of gourmet restaurants and spacious rooms with king-sized beds and well-stocked minibars.
There’s a white-sand beach right on the doorstep here, plus you’re midway between lively Cancun and cosmopolitan Playa del Carmen – it’s about half an hour’s drive to both.
Classes top the list of activities and there’s always something going on. Sign up for poolside dance lessons, learn to make ceviche with the chef, or become a tequila expert at a tasting session.
Foreign language lessons
Daytime activity programme
The daily activity programme can tick off anything from dance lessons to bingo, aqua-aerobics to board games. There’s also usually handcraft-making, language lessons, volleyball or football and pool games dotted throughout the week. Plus, the chefs run cooking demos and the bar staff host tequila tastings.
Introductory scuba diving lessons are held in the pool to give you a taster of what to expect on a day out. When you're ready, you can book with the PADI approved scuba diving school. There's also snorkelling for those who don't fancy gearing up.

Kayaks and boogie boards are available from the beach. You can also take a reef trip – subject to a small National Park fee – by kayak or Hobbycat, when the weather allows.
Stand up paddleboarding
Al fresco massages are the Vassa Spa’s* forte, held in locations like hibiscus-filled gardens and 12-feet-high palapas overlooking the sea. There’s a night-time option, too – on the beach, surrounded by torches.
The gym is air-conditioned and equipped with music, flat screen TV, weights and modern cardio machines. Hand towels, plus bottled and infused waters, are also available at no extra charge.

This hydrotherapy treatment includes a circuit of pressure and lagoon showers, sauna and steam rooms, and sessions in the Jacuzzi.
The facials menu includes hydrating treatments with vitamin A, collagen-stimulating anti-ageing facials and deep-cleansing for problem skin and a sports facial for men.
Beauty salon and body treatments*
Manicures, pedicures and waxing can be booked in the beauty salon. Make-up application, including the option for eyelash extensions, is also available. You can go for body treatments too, these include scrubs and wraps enriched with the likes of mango and papaya or chocolate and coffee.
Appointments can be made for cuts, blow dries, styling, extensions, and braids in the hair salon.
The spa’s Kids’ Suite offers a special menu of treatments for youngsters. Five to nine year olds can choose from aromatherapy massages, mini facials, honey scrubs and chocolate or berry-flavoured body wraps. And there are massages, mud wraps, manicures and pedicures for 10 to 17 year olds. There’s also a Princess For A Day package, which includes a treatment for hands and feet, make up and treats like a marshmallow massage and blueberry facial.
Brides are pampered with special packages that include facials, massages, make-up and hair styling. There’s also a groom’s special that ticks off a massage, sports facial and reflexology. Treatments take place in the bridal suite and include gourmet bites from the chef.
Bridal spa packages include use of the spa bridal suite – complete with Jacuzzi bath and comfy treatment chairs – for three hours, with up to three guests.
Fitness and wellbeing classes
Group classes include the likes of aqua-aerobics and beachfront yoga.
Pools are what this place does best. As well as a big main pool, there’s a splash zone for kids that’s lined with mini sunloungers and a peaceful one that’s just for adults. You can also plump for a swim-up suite* that opens directly onto one of the river-like pools that wind around the hotel grounds.
The beach is lined with shaded, four-poster double daybeds.

A beachfront activity pool sits right at the heart of the resort, with sea views and swim-up access to the Aquanox bar.

Foodies are sorted here. There are 5 gourmet restaurants to choose from, specialising in everything from wood-fired pizzas to lobster. Italian-inspired Roma is a top pick for kids. And the Asian place has a revolving sushi bar.

Roma Italian restaurant

Chefs prepare Italian-inspired cuisine in an open kitchen at this elegant à la carte restaurant. The menu ticks off antipasti, soups, pasta, risotto, gourmet pizzas and mains from the grill. Typical dishes can include mozzarella with black olive pesto, roasted mushroom soup with truffle foam, brie and gorgonzola fettuccini, and pork medallions with prosciutto ham. Families especially love this restaurant for its big booths and lively atmosphere.
This swim-up bar has in-water loungers and a full menu of local and international premium-label drinks and cocktails.

La Mancha energy bar

La Mancha is an al fresco daytime café serving sandwiches, classic Mexican snacks and a long menu of tropical juices, smoothies and milkshakes – all made on the spot with fresh fruit.

Laid-back luxury is the theme at this thatched-roof bar, where you can enjoy premium-label drinks and cocktails on chair beds suspended from the ceiling. It looks out on to the sea and it’s connected to the activity pool, so it also has in-water loungers.
Blue à la carte restaurant

Beachfront a la carte restaurant Blue does all-day international gourmet dining. At breakfast there’s everything from huevos rancheros to eggs benedict. Lunchtimes tick off Mexican specials and super-food salads, plus pizzas, pastas and paninis. And there’s a collection of gourmet menus available to choose from for dinner, including one exclusively made up of lobster dishes.
Agavero tequila lounge

This adults-only tequila bar serves more than 30 different tequilas – straight, mixed, frozen or in cocktails. The bar itself has a frozen ice surface to keep your drinks chilled. The hotel’s expert bartenders host weekly tequila tasting sessions here, so you can get to know your Reposado from your Blanco.
Latino à la carte restaurant

This stylish, design-led a la carte restaurant serves dishes inspired by the flavours of Latin America, so expect to see things like spicy seafood and soups made with tortilla and chorizo on the menu. Mains usually include the likes of Mexican slow-roasted pork, mango and Pisco chicken, and grilled prawns with smoked chilli and cactus sauce.
Tainan Asian à la carte restaurant

You can sit at a table in this stylish Asian restaurant, or pull up a stool at the sushi river – a circular bar where sushi and sashimi is prepared by the chef and placed on the revolving surface for diners to pick and choose from. The à la carte menu features the likes of noodles, coconut curries, spicy soups and tempura.
Special dishes designed for kids, like chicken breast, plain pasta, cheese pizza and hot dogs, are served with fruit, vegetables or fries and followed by mini desserts and ice cream. They’re listed on a special menu that’s covered with games and puzzles and available in all restaurants. Organic Gerber baby food is available in all restaurants.
Chil à la carte restaurant

Chil is a beachfront lunch venue with views of the sea and a laid-back menu of salads, ceviche, tacos, burritos and burgers. Homemade pastries and cakes are also available – and there’s a full menu of fruity lemon and lime chelada drinks, too.

Restaurant dress code
Just so you know, most of Karisma’s gourmet restaurants have a dress code. At breakfast and lunch, it’s casual, but beachwear and headgear aren’t permitted. And at dinner, the dress code is casual elegant, which means no baseball caps or sports shorts. Smart shoes or sandals, trousers, skirts, dresses and formal or capri shorts are encouraged, and gents need to wear sleeved t-shirts or collared shirts instead of tank tops.
Dinner on the beach*
This candlelit dinner is served at a private table on the sand with views of the sea and can be arranged as a romantic experience for couples or a treat for the whole family. The menu is usually made up of four gourmet courses, selected at the time of making your reservation.
