The Riu Palace Mexico is set on Playacar’s white-sand beach, and is less than five minutes’ drive from Playa del Carmen. There are plenty of pools and restaurants on offer, plus a long list of watersports. When it comes to sleeping space, junior suites are the standard here. The styling is sleek and contemporary, and each one comes with extras like 24-hour room service and a hydro-massage bathtub.
The focus falls on water-based activities here – you can try out scuba diving*, or take kayaks, catamarans and body boards out onto the Caribbean Sea. Dry-land sports include volleyball and tennis.
PADI approved scuba diving school*
A PADI scuba diving school operates from the hotel, giving you the chance to gain a full PADI diving certificate – a qualification that's accepted worldwide. For the more experienced divers, there’s a boat that can take you out to a private reef. It's just 15 minutes away, and is reserved for RIU customers only. And if you're a complete beginner and just want to give it a go, you can take advantage of the free introductory session. This takes place daily in the hotel swimming pool.

The buffet restaurant offers a mix of themed spreads – look out for glasses of Cava at breakfast. Snacks are sorted at the coffee shop, where you can grab iced lattes, milkshakes and chocolate-dipped strawberries. In terms of dining, you’ve got 6 restaurants to choose from, including Japanese, Mexican and Italian venues, and a beachfront grill place serving surf ‘n’ turf and baked Alaska flambé.
