Truly Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki – Greece's second-largest city – is located in the northeast of the country and is an ancient place, with history dating back to before 315 BC.

Thessaloniki holidays offer an exciting city, filled with fun, vibrant heritage and lots to do. Thessaloniki is a leading centre of Greek culture, and the city’s ancient past remains alive today in the form of its many historical buildings and monuments that are also World Heritage Sites. The city has in recent times become a hub for music and dance lovers, and was recently voted one of the ultimate party cities in the world.

Out and About

Thessaloniki has a humid, subtropical climate so the summers are hot and dry. Temperatures often climb to 30C and beyond during the summer months so it’s a great destination if you are seeking the sun. Winters, meanwhile, are mild, making it a good spot to visit for some winter sun. With deep cultural roots and beautiful places to explore, holidays in Thessaloniki can be enjoyed at any time of the year.

Thessaloniki is one of Greece's most popular cities, and it's also a university town, giving it a youthful and energetic air. It's easy to get around the city on foot, which is ideal for families. Wander from one sight to another and stopping along the way to sample some of the country's delicious cuisine at some great cafés and restaurants.

There’s also a whole host of museums and art galleries – some old; others quite new – where you can soak up the city’s extraordinary history, heritage and art; a must for history buffs.

Thessaloniki has world-class entertainment and nightlife. There are many brilliant bars and clubs where you can spend your evenings, and there are a number of venues where you can enjoy live musical performances. If you want to hit the dance floor, head to one of the city's excellent nightclubs located slightly outside the town where you can party the night away.

Things to do in Thessaloniki

You can enjoy the best of the beach on your Thessaloniki holidays. There are some glorious stretches of sand near the city, but for some even better ones, head slightly out of the city. The southerly places such as Agia Triada, Epanomi and Perea all have great beaches and are just as popular with the locals as they are with tourists.

Visit the White Tower of Thessaloniki, which is no longer painted white but is a natural stone colour. Located on the waterfront, it's the famous symbol of the city and was once a fort, then a prison and is now a museum, where you can learn all about the region's colourful past.

With plenty of things to do in Thessaloniki for those interested in space, the Thessaloniki Science Centre and Technology Museum provides visitors with truly a fascinating experience. Built in 1978 with the goal of fostering greater public understanding of science, among its attractions is a planetarium, a Cosmotheatre and a motion-simulator theatre, and there are a large number of exhibits.
