Family holidays in Spain
Spain is a fantastically family-friendly destination, and your children will be treated royally wherever they go. Majorca, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Ibiza are some of the best islands to visit with the family, and on mainland Spain, Salou, on the Costa Dorada, and Benidorm, on the Costa Blanca, top the rankings year after year for the most family-friendly resorts. Salou appeals because of its wonderful beaches and coves, most of which are shallow enough to suit even the youngest holidaymakers, its relaxed, laid-back vibe and its wealth of fun attractions. You can stroll along the coastal path, the Camí del Ronda, and kids will enjoy jumping through the city’s many fountains (which have daily shows in summer). And, of course, it’s home to the blockbuster theme park, PortAventura World, which is one of the biggest and wildest in Europe. Benidorm, long regarded a party town, has worked hard in recent years to become a family-friendly resort. Its beaches, some of the best on the Mediterranean coast, are beautiful stretches of white sand, blessed with clean, shallow waters. Attractions include everything from glass-bottomed boat trips, to scores of watersports and a clutch of water parks, safari parks and the massive Terra Mítica theme park.
Family holidays in Portugal
Another superb destination for families, Portugal has spectacular beaches, charming towns and great food, and the locals are delighted to welcome children. Albufeira is a former fishing village that has developed into one of the largest and best equipped resorts on the Algarve, and has plenty to keep both teenagers and younger kids happy. The beaches are spectacular, stretches of golden sand backed by cliffs, and you’ll find lots of facilities from lifeguards to play areas. The charming Old Town is a pretty maze of narrow lanes and squares, full of family-friendly restaurants, and kids will love the dolphin-watching trips and pirate cruises. Attractions like the Slide and Splash and Aqualand water parks are fun for all the family. To really get away from it all, head to the smaller towns of the eastern Algarve, such as Tavira. This whitewashed fishing village has preserved much of its character, with traditional tiled cottages and cobbled lanes. Tavira sits on the fringes of the Ria Formosa National Park, and an inexpensive ferry ride will take you to blissfully unspoilt beaches. Attractions here are of the low-key kind: buckets and spades, gentle strolls, and perhaps a boat trip to see some of the local wildlife.
Family holidays in the Greek Islands
The Greek Islands are an idyllic holiday destination, offering everything from sandy beaches to rock pools, magnificent cultural sights (including plenty to capture the imagination of the youngest visitors) and lively resorts with lots of nightlife and entertainment for teenagers. It’s hard to pick a favourite, but two that stand out as particularly suited to families are Corfu and Crete. Corfu, covered in verdant forest and fringed by immaculate beaches, combines glorious scenery and perfect peace. Best resorts for families include Paleokastritsa, which has retained much of its original character and enjoys a splendid setting amid olive groves and hills. Big enough to have plenty of facilities and entertainment for teenagers, its clutch of beaches will keep the little ones happy too. Crete has culture, history, and gorgeous landscapes as well as the summer essentials of sun, sea and sand. Aghia Pelagia is one of its best child-friendly resorts, with a large sheltered bay, great snorkelling and plenty of watersports. Myth-mad kids might enjoy following in the footsteps of the Minotaur at the nearby ruins of Knossos.
Family holidays in Turkey
Turkey’s Turquoise Coast lives up to its name with picture-postcard beaches lapped by a dazzling, azure sea. Its gateway city is Antalya, a fantastic resort set around the gorgeous Konyaaltı Beach. Boat rides, water sports and diving are just some of the family-friendly activities on offer, and the ancient sites (rock tombs and Roman ruins among them) and scenic beauty spots such as the magnificent Düden Waterfalls will ensure that there’s always something to keep you and the family entertained. The area’s main resort is Olu Deniz which offers families superb array of entertainment in the form of stunning beaches, beautiful scenery (notably the Blue Lagoon, perfect for little children to swim in), grisly cave tombs and a wealth of great family-friendly attractions such as the Water World water park.
